What are Colleges & Employers Really Looking for?
Colleges . . .
More and more now days, colleges are not looking for students who are academically exceptional. Yes, they consider your GPA, course selection and test scores but, according the the AP/College Board, colleges consider the "character and the personal qualities" you bring. What makes you stand out? You need to think about why YOU want to attend a university so that means specifically knowing what your goals are and having a plan for achieving them. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 30% of college students change their major at least once before graduating. When time is money, that gets really expensive. |
Employers . . .
Without a doubt the data still supports the fact that STEM fields are growing industries with plenty of job opportunities and high-paying positions for those with the degrees and training to fill them. But when it comes to who actually gets hired, Forbes identified the top 5 skills employers are really looking for: Communication, Customer Service, Leadership, Attention to Detail and Collaboration. You may be smart and skilled but if you lack these "soft skills" you may be passed up for another candidate. |
